Technology Transfer and Patents:

Studiengesellschaft Kohle mbH

Technology Transfer, i. e. the transition of results of basic research into industrial applications, has always been an important issue at the Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung (see History). Already in 1925 a company dedicated to this task has been founded:

The Studiengesellschaft Kohle mbH (SGK) is acting exclusively as a trustee for the non-profit organization Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung - and to some extent also for the Max-Planck-Institut für Bioanorganische Chemie  - with the objective to exploit the research results of the Institute.

The Studiengesellschaft Kohle

  • establishes research cooperations of the Institute with industrial partners
  • applies for and owns patents based on research results of the institutes
  • grants licenses to industrial partners
  • prosecutes infringers of patents.
