Technology Transfer, i. e. the transition of results of basic research into industrial applications, has always been an important issue at the Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung (see History). Already in 1925 a company dedicated to this task has been founded:
The Studiengesellschaft Kohle mbH (SGK) is acting exclusively as a trustee for the non-profit organization Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung - and to some extent also for the Max-Planck-Institut für Bioanorganische Chemie - with the objective to exploit the research results of the Institute.
The Studiengesellschaft Kohle
establishes research cooperations of the Institute with industrial partners applies for and owns patents based on research results of the institutes grants licenses to industrial partners prosecutes infringers of patents.
