Legal Structure
Since 1939, the Institute is an independent, non-profit organisation governed by private law. It is controlled by a Board of Governors (Verwaltungsrat) consisting of representatives from industry, the city of Mülheim an der Ruhr, the state of Nordrhein-Westfalen and the Max-Planck-Society. The Board of Governors elects a chairman and two vice-chairman (Vorstand).
The objective of the Foundation is the scientific investigation of coal for the common good. It is implemented through basic research in the natural sciences.
The Foundation is legally bound by its statute and by the legislation of the state of Nordrhein-Westfalen (Stiftungsgesetz). The Foundation is registered as a non-profit organisation and receives public funding in the framework of the Max-Planck-Society. The Institute is a member of the Association of German Foundations (Bundesverband Deutscher Stiftungen).
